Meet Joshua Carr, LGPC
Practicing since: 2025
Joshua Carr graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Masterβs degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He is inspired to be part of a field that works to close the mental health gap and increase diversity within the therapy room. He believes mental health care is a universal right and should not be considered a luxury accessible only to a select few while leaving others without adequate care. This conviction is reinforced by Joshuaβs view that seeing a therapist from one’s own community can help normalize therapy and allow clients to feel seen, heard, and validated. He strives to expand perspectives beyond traditional Western psychological models to provide care that is fresh, holistic, communal, and culturally responsive.
Joshua views clients as the experts of their own lived experiences and believes their understanding of those experiences can be a powerful platform for healing. His person-centered approach allows him to facilitate the process rather than feeding answers to a client or telling them exactly what healing looks like. In therapy with Joshua, clients may explore how external systems influence them, like patriarchy, racism, classism, and rigid cultural expectations. He believes it is important to look beyond the individual and consider the larger systems and expectations that shape how clients view themselves.
Joshua considers emotions as meaningful signals that provide insight into what the mind or body needs. When appropriate, he invites clients to slow down and develop greater awareness of where emotions may be experienced physically. This bottom-up approach allows clients to explore how stress and trauma can affect the nervous system and manifest in the body.
Clients can expect a warm, genuine, conversational, and collaborative therapeutic experience. Joshua encourages clients to arrive as they are, without feeling the need to perform or have all the answers. He believes therapy can help clients develop new insights, reach their own conclusions, and become more confident in their decision-making. Rather than telling clients what to do, Joshua helps them examine their lives honestly, identify what aligns with their goals and values, and determine what changes may support the life they want to build.
Joshua Carr, LGPC, is licensed in the state of Maryland (#LGP18340) and under the clinical supervision of Matthew Piercey, LCPC (#LC9076).
